Problem Cat (Just Kids series)

Books

PC, the cat, really plays up when Andrew's dad goes overseas. Andrew and his mother are getting really annoyed and aren't sure what to do until Andrew realises something important about his pet. This is a story about the special relationships we have with our pets - in the Just Kids series for younger readers.

Author's Comments

PC or Problem Cat was based on a real cat (my beautiful black cat called PC) who used to jump for pegs, and slide around in the bath on his back. He also used to bully the dogs in the neighbourhood. I didn't believe this when my neighbours first told me, until I witnessed it for myself and saw my cat slinking in the grass towards where a Labrador was sniffing around near the fence. He was very satisfied when he managed to get a swipe in at the poor dog's nose. My lovely PC died aged 19, and I now have another black cat called Peace II. Animals are the same as people in that they behave strangely sometimes when there are changes that upset them. Problem Cat is a story about a boy who really chooses to get to know his cat.

Reading Activity
•

Read other books in the Just Kids series. Look at how long they are and how many chapters are in them, and then try writing a book yourself.

•

Find out about animal behaviour. Try to work out how your cat is feeling by the things that she does and the sounds that she makes.

•

Try making up your own recipes for food for your cat. You can make cat biscuits, or a meat mix with special healthy supplements. Make up a brand name for your cat biscuits, put them in jars and sell them to your friends' parents.

•

Read one of my favourite books about animals by authors like Anne Fine. I particularly like her funny stories and books that are told from an animal's point of view. Try one of the books below.
